Traidenham Yard - A small DCC project

I have set myself the task of building a small DCC demonstration layout for the Leamington & Warwick MRS to promote DCC and many other aspects of building a first layout and I shall be using the following pages to document the progress of this project.

The layout is not of any particular era or railway region but it is meant to suggest a small industrial yard with the railway serving the factories and other industries around it.

The control will utilise DCC for both loco and point control and incorporate Kadee couplers for automatic shunting.

But I am getting ahead of myself as we first must have some idea of what we are building.

Construction

Raw materiels

So we decided that it would be an 8 foot by 15 inch shunting layout, so we sourced two 4 x 2 foot Sundelea boards and some 2 x 0.5 inch lengths of pine ( Pic1 ).

There would be two frames like this ( Pic2 ), that the Sundelea board would sit on top of.

The frames would be screwed together at the corners ( Pic3 ) and the Sundelea screwed onto the top ( Pic4 & Pic5 )

This gives the frame strnegth and rigidity. The joints can be glued as well for extra strength.

Proposed frame
Pilot holes for joints
Aligning boards
Alignment of boards with dowels
Joints and dowels

As this is a portable layout we needed to have a way to be able to join the two 4 foot baseboards so that they could be dismantled and rejoined but still maintain their alignment.

I clamped the two boards together ( Pic6 ) and drilled 3 pilot holes into which I inserted dowels. Then two further pilot holes were drilled which would take long bolts which would be used to clamp the baseboards together ( Pic7 & Pic8 ).

What we end up with is a nice baseboard 8 foot long by 15 inches wide ready to take our track etc ( Pic9 ).

And onto this we will be laying out the track plan shown below.
