Fairhaven - a brief history

After many years of not having a layout of my own but still attending shows and buying magazines I felt I wanted to get back into the hobby. The quality of the locos and coaches had come on in leaps and bounds since my modelling days in the 1980’s, so I decided that I would see if I could get a small, quality layout that would be expandable but be usable from day one. I didn’t want to initially have to build a layout from scratch, that would come later.

So I kept an eye on eBay for small layouts and initially was disappointed at the lack of any of quality - there where plenty of 6x4 tail chasers but that was not what I was after. However in May 2005 I came across Fairhaven being sold and after a successful bid and a trip to Portsmouth to pick it up, it was mine.

It has been a purchase I have not regretted one bit and it has and still continues to give me an enormous amount of pleasure.

This was bought as a small Cab controlled layout measuring about 12 foot by 2 foot with a 6 foot right angle section for the engine shed.

It was designed to fit into a spare room as can be seen from the photo.

The layout depicts a small station serving a small harbour whose main industry is fishing.

There is a small shunting yard to handle the box vans needed to take the daily catch away from the fishery.

There is also a small engine shed and coaling facility.

General view of Fairhaven

The layout has a Southern Railways flavour, with Pullman cars serving the station, and is set in the 1970-80s.

There is a lot of detail fitted into a small space but it doesn’t look crowded at all and has plenty of operational potential.
